Since its creation 75 years ago, the United Nations has cemented itself as the most powerful multilateral tool available to States and their citizens in the preservation of international peace and security, in the pursuit of sustainable development and in the promotion and defence of human rights.
Meeting the challenges that face the world today requires, more than ever, the concerted effort of the international community. The Covid-19 pandemic is just one example of how it is only by acting together that can we respond to threats that cross continents and have no respect for borders. In this effort, the UN and its agencies have taken on a central and indispensable role.
As for Portugal, I know that it will continue to support and contribute to the UN system, continuing its path to sustainable development, by fully implementing its 2030 Agenda. It is also a great source of pride to us to have one of our compatriots, António Guterres, at the head of the organisation, in whose leadership and worldview we see ourselves reflected.
We are absolutely convinced that respect for international law and human dignity, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter, remain the basic principles of world order and international peacekeeping. It is with these principals in mind that, in the pursuit of a better world, we must continue to strive for a fairer society and a more environmentally friendly economy.
