Na última semana de junho, Portugal vai co-organizar, juntamente com o Quénia, a 2ª Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre o Oceano. Depois de 2017 ter juntado a comunidade internacional em Nova Iorque, será agora a vez de Lisboa receber delegados de todo o mundo que, em parceria com a sociedade civil, vão discutir os grandes problemas do oceano e procurar soluções.
Porque é que isto é importante? A resposta é simples: porque dependemos do oceano para viver. 50% do oxigénio que respiramos vem do mar, ao mesmo tempo que absorve 25% do dióxido de carbono. No entanto, a sua saúde tem-se vindo a degradar, com fenómenos como a acidificação e o número crescente de plásticos. Por outro lado, conhecemos pouco do oceano, onde apenas 19% dos fundos estão mapeados. E as oportunidades? São imensas, representando à escala global 1.5 trillion de USD e 30 milhões de postos de trabalho.

In the last week of June, Portugal will co-host, together with Kenya, the 2nd United Nations Ocean Conference. After the 1st Conference in New York in 2017, Lisbon will now welcome delegates from all over the world who, in close partnership with the civil society, will reflect on the main problems of the ocean and seek for solutions.
Why is this important? The answer is easy: because we depend on the ocean for our own survival. 50% of the oxygen we breathe comes from the sea, which also works as a carbon sink for 25% of the carbon dioxide we produce. In spite of that, ocean health has been deteriorating because of phenomena such as acidification and marine litter, namely plastics. Besides, our knowledge on the ocean is still rather limited as only 19% of the sea floor has been mapped. What about the opportunities? They are huge, representing 1.5 trillion USD and more then 30 million ocean-related jobs.
